There are a number of household products that have proven to be effective in removing certain kinds of stains from carpets and upholstery for residents of Newcastle, Central Coast, Maitland & Lake Macquarie. The major five ones are club soda, white vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, dishwashing detergent and, perhaps surprisingly, shaving cream.
Each of them works best on different types of stains, based on the chemical composition of the staining material versus the chemicals makeup of the cleaning products. For beer and wine, club soda works remarkably well. Apply the soda to a clean, white cloth and blot the area of the spill with the cloth. If it still leaves a bit of the stain, then mix one part white vinegar with one part water. Place the mixture in a spray bottle, spray the entire area and let it sit for around 10 or 15 minutes.
Then use a clean sponge to blot up the remaining liquid. Place some paper towels over the area and weight them down. Leave them there until the carpet is dry to the touch.
Protein-Based Stains are Among the Easiest to Remove
Hydrogen peroxide is used to clean protein-based based stains such as the juices from meats as well as bloodstains. First loosen up dried stains with water mixed with dishwashing detergent. Then pour the hydrogen peroxide directly on the stain. When it hits these types of stains you’ll see it start to foam. Finally blot up the hydrogen peroxide with paper towels.
For thicker grease stains, you’ll find that a grease-cutting dishwashing detergent works well. Use a drop or two per a cup of water then put the solution in a spray bottle. Spray the solution on the stain and then blot up the liquid with a paper towel.Again, you may find that you have to repeat the treatment several times to remove the stain completely, but just be patient and work at it gently until the stain is completely gone.
Shaving Cream Handles a Lot of General Stains
For some general household stains, shaving cream seems to be the one effective cleaning agent that will clean just about any type of stain. It works just as well on organic as well as inorganic substances.
Just apply the shaving cream directly on the stain and leave it there for about a half an hour. Once the shaving cream has covered the stain for a good while, blot it up with a clean, white cloth. If any hints of the stain still remains, finish the process by applying the same mixture of vinegar and water you used to treat wine stains and then blotting up that solution with another clean, white cloth.
Never use coloured cloth to blot stains, the cleaning products might cause the colour of the cloth to bleed into the carpet, negating the point of the whole exercise.
